Let me begin by giving credit where credit's due to British suspense/thriller novelist Stephen Leather for leading me to this very humorous short story by Welshman Andrew Peters. I was checking out Leather's blog site this morning and saw THE VENUSIAN VAMP (THE BLUES DETECTIVE) mentioned there and being a Leather fan I thought, "Hmmm What's this?" Well, I checked it out here on amazon and found out that this fun short story was available for download to my Kindle for 0.99 cents! A deal I couldn't pass up. I'm glad I didn't, as this was a very amusing little tale about Otis King, the Blues Detective), and his being hired by Ursula, a gorgeous, green babe from Venus to, ummm, do some unusual detecting for her."I have, of course, no idea of Venusian standards of beauty, but to Welsh eyes, this chick is a looker. Green she certainly is, though not that much different to the shade I sometimes turn after a few glasses of Uncle Twm's Rhondda Rum. More of a sheen than a color." (Otis devouring Ursula with his bleary eyes as she enters his office.)
I was so interested in the further adventures of this blues guitar playing PI, I downloaded the original selection of 10 Otis King short stories by Peters. Sci-fi isn't a genre that I particularly like to read, but I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this particular sci-fi story. Highly recommended - 5 Stars

The Venusian Vamp The Blues Detective edition by Andrew Peters Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Otis King is at is again, detective work for those who know him too well from previous books. Although he's still playing Blues, eating Welsh Cakes and womanizing.
In this installment he's knocked for six when a tall stacked woman with curves in all the right places and lovely tint of green walks in his door to hire him for her case.
Novella's are short and sweet and this is a prime reason why I read them so often.
The writing is witty and being from Wales I loved the little tidbits mentioned about Otis's country of birth.
This boyo certainly knows his stuff!
Anybody who can use the word 'trimammaried' in a manner that looks absolutely appropriate is endowed with a certain writing genius. Mr Peters is such an author. I've come lately to appreciate his musings, and followed the adventures of the Welshcakes-boosted and Bourbon-fuelled Otis King, private detective to the blues cognoscenti in Memphis. The vicarious pleasure thus derived is not to be missed. Allow your mental ribs to be tickled, fill your boots with this man's work, you'll thank yourself for the smile it puts on your face. The story line in The Venusian Vamp is almost spelled out from the title, but it's the WRITING that gets you in, and keeps you with it. Enjoy.
Subject matter is unusual. The story was quite different. Not the type of detective mystery I am use to reading.

Mr Peters writes a funny, engaging tale, more like hearing a story from a friend than reading a book. I love the personal way he talks to the reader and pulls you into the story, not that you need it. My ultimate test of a book is how I feel when it's done. When I finished this one, I waited...about ten minutes...and read another of his works.
In this short read, Andrew Peters manages to develop a rich Runyonesque story.
Okay, I highly doubt that Damon Runyon would have come up with a plot involving green beings with an unusual abundance of body parts, even in his worst drunken nightmare. But Peters's droll turns of phrase have a Runyony ring to them. Not to be confused with onion rings.
Anyway, I enjoyed the whole romp, topped off with Peters's signature "Oh, by the way" ending.
What a refreshing and fun read! I had no idea if there were more titles in this detective series, but once I learned that there is, I added them to my wish list.
I downloaded this short story when it was offered as a freebie. I found it quirky, funny, sometimes cheesy, but primarily a very clever ebook.
I would have awarded it five stars, but the document needs some editing. I encourage the author to find someone to fix the issues.
So fun! Get it. You need to read this unique story.
If you have read anything previous from Andrew Peters you know he isn't much for following the rules of writing. To Andrew, it would seem, rules are not only meant to be broken, but shot to hell, slit across the throat and stuffed into a deep hole to later be filled with cement. But Andrew Peters is nothing if not imaginative. This latest fiasco, er, I mean lark, ah, perhaps selection would be a good word? seems to follow this total lack of rules and is a very enjoyable piece of (Okay, I simply cannot use the term literature in this regard, but...) quirky amusement. Yes, that's it exactly. Mr. Peters has dug so far down into the well of his imagination in conjuring up the plot and story line for this offering that I believe he may have come out on the other side of the Earth. Read "The Venusian Vamp" at your peril, er, I mean leisure, sure, and marvel at the wondrous story-fracturing, er, telling Mr. Peters weaves for us once more.
